𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨 𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗢𝗡 𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗞𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗔 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗛𝗥𝗔 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗛: Drought in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh highlights the growing challenges of water security and agricultural sustainability in India. With erratic monsoon patterns, declining groundwater levels and increasing dependence on water-intensive crops, drought management requires more than temporary relief. Strengthening rainwater harvesting, promoting micro-irrigation and adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices are essential to protect farmers' livelihoods and ensure long-term water security. The situation also underscores the need for better coordination between the Centre and State governments in disaster response and resource management. What measures can you think for better water security for India in the coming years ?

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has warned of a “major food crisis” in the coming months, in addition to the already significant fertiliser shortages the world is witnessing due to the Ukraine and Iran conflicts, saying the situation is “very very stressful” for Global South economies.

But treaty privilege ≠ unrestricted property ownership. RBI rules require prior permission for a citizen of Nepal to acquire/transfer most immovable property in India; leases up to five years are an important exception. Very high-yield polity trap: a subject of Nepal can be eligible for many Central Government services/posts in India, generally subject to a Government of India certificate of eligibility. Such eligibility does not extend to the Indian Foreign Service for subjects of Nepal under the standard rule. Therefore: “Only Indian citizens can apply for every Central Government post” = incorrect as a blanket statement. India–Nepal relations are not just strategic; they are deeply based on cross-border kinship, labour mobility, trade, culture and pilgrimage. Nepal is landlocked, making transit connectivity through India strategically and economically important. Geography wall: Nepal borders Uttarakhand → Uttar Pradesh → Bihar → West Bengal → Sikkim.
For CSE Prelims 2027, these are the Tier-1 gems I’d actually retain from the India–Nepal discussion: 1950 India–Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship is the core framework behind their unusually close movement/residence relationship. India–Nepal has an open-border arrangement: ordinary movement is far more liberal than with most other Indian neighbours. Open border ≠ common citizenship. Nepali citizens in India remain foreign nationals; they do not automatically get Indian voting or citizenship rights. A Nepali national ordinarily does not need an Indian employment visa merely to work in India under the special bilateral framework. There is no general “return to Nepal every 6 months” requirement comparable to an ordinary tourist-visa regime. Treaty privileges are reciprocal in principle: movement, residence, economic activity and related privileges are extended on a special basis to nationals of both countries.
