The Hindu editorial on drought in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh

With erratic monsoon patterns, declining groundwater levels and increasing dependence on water-intensive crops, drought management requires more than temporary relief. Strengthening rainwater harvesting, promoting micro-irrigation and adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices are essential to protect farmers' livelihoods and ensure long-term water security. The situation also underscores the need for better coordination between the Centre and State governments in disaster response and resource management. What measures can you think for better water security for India in the coming years ?

India needs district-level water budgets that align crop choices with local water availability. Incentivising farmers to shift from water intensive crops, reusing treated wastewater, and reviving traditional ponds can reduce groundwater depletion. Our goal must be to make every drop count through scientific planning and more tier 3 level participation.

1)Groundwater Recharge Zones along the Coast 2)Decentralize Sewage Treatment Plants 3)Smart Water Metering 4)Revival of Local Lakes and Reservoirs 5) micro irrigation 6) Diverting Godavari and Krishna water to rural and urban areas instead of draining into the Bay of Bengal is vital for water security
