Economy: CAD flow from imports to rupee weakness and when it matters
Let's simplify CAD today! (Economy) Most aspirants know: CAD = Imports > Exports But UPSC doesn’t stop there. It looks at what happens next. Here’s the flow you should actually see: Higher Imports (especially oil) → More dollars needed to pay for imports → Demand for dollar increases → Rupee weakens → Imports become even more expensive → Inflation pressure builds Now pause here. This is why CAD becomes a concern. But here’s the part most people miss: Not all CAD is bad. If CAD is due to: Import of machinery / infrastructure → Future production increases → Growth improves → CAD becomes manageable But if CAD is due to: Oil shocks / gold imports → No productive return → Currency pressure + inflation → Risk increases So the real question is never: “Is CAD high?” It is: “Why is CAD high?” If you are stuck on any topic and want me to simplify it for you, let me know.
