UPSC-style debate: geography vs culture in vegetarianism
Vegetarianism and non-vegetarianism are largely geographical phenomena, shaped by climate, ecology, food availability, and historical livelihoods not merely cultural or religious choices. Do you agree, or do culture and religion play a more decisive role?

Culture definitely plays a decisive role like in Andhra Pradesh has a 98% non vegetarian majority, certain traditional communities from the same region remain strictly vegetarian due to deep religious customs

Geography>>cultural >>personal choices

@Lali @lohit_03 @samindher @rathiprati @Ydhruv-6 Think a little deeper. I’m not talking about the present or any particular individual. Historically, geography and climate shaped food habits, which gradually became part of cultural and religious traditions. The arid climate of the Arabian Peninsula influenced its traditional diet, while coastal communities incorporated seafood into their culture. Food habits are often shaped by geography first and reinforced by culture and religion over time.

If Jainism would have developed in Andaman and Nicobar jains would be eating fish and seafood. Food has no connection with religion , food is 100% geographical in origin . In Saudi it was impossible to cook during the day that's why they used to cook at night . Gangetic plains had food grains and buddhism and Jainism developed without non veg and stem less food . Hinduism developed in modern pakistan , shows the incidents of both veg and non veg .

Geography shapes what people eat, religion shapes what they consider right to eat....or say....Geography shapes our food habits, religion shapes our food beliefs. Religion indeed plays crucial role.
