UPSC prelims 2026 environment: aquatic species tolerant to cadmium
Dear IAS/CSE Aspirants, 🔖 this details for your prelims 2026 🌊 UPSC Environment–Ecotoxicology Focus: Aquatic Species Tolerant to Cadmium ➡️ Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and some catfish species (Clarias spp.) show relatively high tolerance to cadmium-contaminated freshwater. ➡️ Certain crabs, especially the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), can also tolerate and accumulate significant levels of cadmium and other heavy metals. ➡️ These organisms store cadmium mainly in gills, liver/hepatopancreas, and kidneys, enabling survival in polluted waters. ➡️ Because of their bioaccumulation capacity, such fish and crab species are used as bioindicators to monitor heavy-metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Nowhere in India you will get such information relevant from Exam PoV. Utilise it for ensuing prelims 2026
