Shree Ram worshipped Goddess Durga for 9 straight days before going to war with Ravana....on the ninth day, Goddess Durga blessed Ram...the next day, on Dussehra, Ravana was killed.

According to Hindu scriptures Mahishasura performed severe penance and received a boon from Lord Brahma that no man or god could kill him. He became arrogant and began troubling the gods and the people. To defeat him the divine powers of the gods united and created Maa Durga.
Maa Durga fought Mahishasura for nine days and nights. On the tenth day she defeated him and restored peace to the world. This victory is celebrated as Vijayadashami......
