Caste was neither solely an invention of colonialism nor purely a legacy of Brahmanical traditions; it is the product of an interaction between both. Brahmanical texts and social practices had already institutionalised hierarchy through the varna-jati system, ritual purity, and endogamy. However, British colonial rule transformed these fluid and regionally diverse identities into rigid administrative categories through censuses, legal codification, and official classifications. This hardened caste identities, influencing politics, representation, and access to resources. Thus, Brahmanical traditions laid the historical foundations of caste, while colonialism standardized, institutionalized, and reinforced it. Understanding both dimensions is essential for addressing caste inequalities in contemporary India.
